If you are just starting to research under sink water filters, things can get a bit confusing. Instead of worrying about the safety and purity of the water your family is drinking, take a few minutes to read the guidelines below when purchasing a water filter system.
With a vast array of under sink water filters on the market, it is easy to get overwhelmed by the choices. There are distillation systems, reverse osmosis systems, kinetic degradation fluxion (KDF), and carbon filters.
All of these systems have their pros and cons, however, here are a few things you should be aware of when looking for an under sink water filter.
- All filters must be NSF certified. When water filters conform to ANSI / NSF 42 & 53 standards you can be assured that it will be efficient at filtering contaminates such as cysts, chlorine, mercury, lead, silt, sand, and bacteria in the water. The presence of NSF certification also means that is is not necessary to spend extra money on a name brand.
- Consider ease of installation. While you could rely on professional installation, choosing a filter system that you can install yourself without specialized tools or knowledge will, of course, save you money.
- Size restrictions. How much space do you have under your sink? Determine how much storage space you are willing to designate for your under sink water filter. While you are down there, be sure there is adequate room for routing water supply tubing and waste lines.
- Be sure you can change the filter. Avoid installing in such a cramped location that you cannot change the filter when needed.
- While looking for the best price, be sure to compare apples to apples. Pricing varies greatly depending upon filter type and features so be sure the specifications match when comparing prices.
